INTERNATIONAL DISPUTES:

Dispute with Cameroun over land and maritime boundaries in the vicinity of the Bakasi Peninsula has been referred to the International Court of Justice.

SOCIO-POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT:
There are more than 250 separate ethnic groups in Nigeria; and as many languages. The political entity known as Nigeria, named after the great River Niger, which runs across the present day border in the North-West to the Southern coast, was created in 1914 by the amalgamation of the British protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria. At that time, there were only four regions viz: Northern, Eastern and Western provinces, and the colony of Lagos.
1954: Nigeria became a federation of 3 regions : Northern, Eastern and Western regions.
1957: Western and Eastern regions attained self governing status.
1959: Tafawa Balewa became Nigeria's first prime minister.
1960: October 1st Independence was achieved.
1963: Nigeria became a Republic.
1967: Session of Biafra resulting to outbreak of civil war.
1970: End of civil war.
1979: Second civil rule emerged with Alhaji Shehu Shagari as the President under National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
1985: (August)- Military coup bringing General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida to power as military Head of state
1986: An IMF styled- Structural Adjustment Programme was launched.
1993: (June) Presidential election presumably won by Chief Moshood Abiola.
1993: (August) Chief Ernest Shonekan emerged as the Head of Interim National Government (ING)
1993: (General Sani Abacha assumed power as military Head of state.
1995: (November) Minority rights campaigner- Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 others from oil producing Ogoni area were executed following a controversial murder trial by military tribunal.
1998: General Sani Abacha died apparently of heart attack.
1998: General Abdulsalami Abubakar became military Head of state.
1999: (February) General Elections and a formal end to military Rule.
1999: (May) Chief Olusegun Obasanjo became President under PDP.
2003: (April) Re-election of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as President.
